About Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan :
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, founded on November 7, 1938 by Shri K. M. Munshi with blessings of Shri
Mahatma Gandhi, is a cultural movement dedicated to reviving and modernizing Indian culture. It began
with departments in Sanskrit, Indian history, and various Indian languages, and quickly expanded through
generous donations and community support. Despite challenges such as losing its Andheri premises
during World War II, the Bhavan grew steadily, establishing institutes for Jain studies, Sanskrit, arts,
science, music, and culture. A major milestone was the construction of its grand Central Home in Bombay
in 1949, largely due to the efforts of Smt. Lilavati Munshi. The Bhavan further expanded with its Book
University, the Sanskrit Vishva Parishad, and new branches, including one in Delhi inaugurated by
President Dr. Rajendra Prasad in 1952. From modest beginnings, the Bhavan has evolved into a nationally
respected centre for Indian culture and Indological research, guided by the vision and dedication of its
founder and supporters.
Over the years, the Bhavan has remained steadfast in its mission to blend India's ancient wisdom with
contemporary needs. Through its educational institutions, cultural centres, publications, and research
wings, it continues to promote values, arts, and knowledge that reflect India's rich heritage. Its sustained
growth and nationwide influence stand as a testament to the enduring relevance of its ideals and its
commitment to nurturing a culturally enriched, enlightened society.
